Traffic

Since 1998, the Greek Theatre has worked with the noted transportation management firm, Transportation Management Services, and its president, Peter Valk, on ways to reduce the impact of traffic on the Greek Theatre’s neighbors, reduce parking on turf, and improve traffic circulation.   In the opinion of Mr. Valk:

The Nederlander Organization has a track record of being proactive in attacking traffic issues.

The Nederlander Organization and the City have been successful with implementing many of the recommendations from the 90-Day and 1998 Traffic Studies including:

  • Western Canyon diversion – used for all sell-out crowds.  Reduces exit times by 10 to 20 minutes
  • Lane control helps keep cars moving in and out
  • Sophisticated traffic equipment, including lighted batons – help traffic control officers direct vehicles and pedestrians

These improvements have:

  • Reduced the time to get into and out of the theatre
  • Improved traffic flow
  • Made parking more accessible.

Surveys conducted in 1998 and in preparation for our current proposal tell us that traffic and parking are the key concerns for:

  • Patrons
  • Neighbors
  • Citywide residents

We developed the traffic and parking program shown here to address several key objectives:

  • Continue with improvements, but think more creatively

  • Provide solutions that benefit more than Theatre patrons – neighbors and all Angelenos

  • Minimize neighborhood effects

  • Preserve green spaces

As the charts show, the traffic and parking programs included in the proposal recognize the importance of traffic by front-loading more than 40% of the $1.6 million proposed in the 20-year plan into the 10-year program and over 80% of the $1.6 million into the 15-year plan.
