Capital Improvement

The Nederlander capital improvement proposal for the Greek Theatre is much more than a plan to build and renovate physical structures - it is a vision for coexistence between live entertainment and America's parklands.

To accomplish its aims and vision for the Greek Theatre, Nederlander retained a distinguished team of architectural, environmental and historical professionals to enhance, develop and translate its ideas into reality.  This team of experts is referred to as the Greek Theatre Architectural and Engineering Group ("GTAEG").

GTAEG's optimism about the Greek Theatre's future and its determined ascent to the highest ranks of live music venues is grounded in its history.

When Nederlander became the operator of the Theatre on behalf of the Department of Recreation and Parks, the Theatre was in poor physical condition, the attendance and public acceptance was low and the City of Los Angeles was forced to subsidize the operator by paying the operator each year just to keep the Greek open.  Today, the Greek Theatre is both a Los Angeles landmark, and indeed, a national treasure.

GTAEG presents here, a set of conceptual designs that capture the beauty of the Greek Theatre and its natural surroundings.  The inspiration for these designs are based on the Nederlander experience at the Greek Theatre and at many other live music venues across the country.

The Greek Agora

As originally proposed, by Nederlander, a landscaped plaza at the front of the Theatre will be created to replicate the flow and feel of a Greek agora, or public gathering space.  The design features will substantially expand concessions and merchandise opportunities and significantly enhance the patron experience at the Theatre, including a "mini picnic ampitheater".

Concessions

Enhancing and upgrading the food service at the Greek Theatre will be achieved through the renovation and construction of new concession areas, including 27 convenient points of sale.  As part of this project, the permanent concession areas on the North and South sides of the Theatre will be redesigned for greater operating efficiency.

The Stage House

Originally envisioned as an open-air theatre in 1913, the Theatre was ultimately completed in 1930, utilizing the design of Heath and Grove Architects.  In the 1950's, the Theatre was remodeled.  The 1950's stage roof sits atop the original 1930's Greek Theatre.

Nederlander proposes to build a Stage House designed to maximize the views of the surrounding natural environment, to minimize the masking of the structure, and most importantly, to accent the historic features of Greek Theatre to the fullest extent possible.

Hidden Valley an Ecological Parking Solution

The Hidden Valley parking area will comprise a series of ecological parking terraces landscaped into the hillside located northwest of the northern perimeter of the Theatre.  Hidden Valley will accommodate approximately 259 vehicles or 10% of a sold-out show.

The parking terraces are created by using a system called "geo-pavers," or grasscrete, which allows vehicular and pedestrian traffic without damage to the grass (this system is also known as "turfblock").  This is an environmentally sensitive design that will allow water to permeate the ground.

The edges of the terraces are "fenced" with a topiary wall - a mesh-like structure that allows vines to grow and ultimately form an architectural hedge.  The terraces will appear to be a series of hedges cascading up the hill.  When parking is not required, the terraces are ideal for picnics, playing catch or sunbathing.

Nederlander's goal of improving the overall customer experience at the Theatre will include the unique "Taste of L.A." food and beverage courts, feature favorites foods "home grown" in Los Angeles.
