The Organization

Nederlander, with headquarters in Los Angeles and New York City, owns or operates more than 25 theaters and amphitheaters worldwide in the United States and England. The three-generation, family-owned firm also produces and presents a wide variety of legitimate theatre and concert attractions, as well as booking its own and non-Nederlander venues. Nederlander is the exclusive concert booking agent for Southern California's top venues, including the Greek Theatre, The Arrowhead Pond of  Anaheim, the STAPLES Center, the Great Western Forum, Pantages Theatre and the Bakersfield Centennial Garden.

The History

David T. Nederlander founded the company in 1912 with a single theatre in Detroit, Michigan. That single theatre soon grew into a chain of legitimate theatres and outdoor venues. As one of the largest theatrical empires in the world today, the Nederlanders produce and present a broad array of theatrical and concert entertainment, from The Lion King to the Bolshoi Ballet and from Alanis Morissette to Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band.

It was James M. Nederlander who recognized the opportunity for first-class entertainment in Southern California and brought the Nederlander organization here. In 1976, he purchased the historic Pantages Theatre and successfully won the lease to operate The Greek Theatre for the City of Los Angeles. Since then he has expanded the company's operations to the STAPLES Center, Arrowhead Pond, Great Western Forum and Centennial Garden. James M. Nederlander now serves as Chairman of the Board of several Nederlander companies.

James L. Nederlander, son of James M. and grandson of David T. Nederlander, is the current president of the firm. He has grown up in the family business and, starting as a teen-ager in the firm's Pine Knob Music Theatre in Detroit, has worked in every division of the Nederlander organization, from the box office to marketing to booking to producing.

At The Greek Theatre

For more than 25 years, the Nederlander companies have been doing business with the City of Los Angeles in a long-running relationship with the Department of Recreation and Parks at the Greek Theatre. This relationship has resulted in a very impressive turnaround in Greek Theatre fortunes.

When Nederlander made its first bid for the Greek Theatre lease in the 1970's, the venue was under-performing financially and in need of care and attention. Nederlander stepped in and focused on key areas of operation and made improvements that have been critical to the Theatre's rebirth and renown - new sound systems, new seating, better food and beverage concessions - and just last year - a $2 million dollar renovation of the Theatre's restroom facilities.

The Greek's historic features have been maintained, the facilities are well-kept and functional, shows are frequently SOLD OUT, food and beverage concessions are bigger and better, and the Theatre is a favorite among performers and concert-goers alike.

Nederlander-Greek success is credited to the tireless efforts of its staff and the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and its Board of Commissioners.
